I was just brainstorming about ideas, not just to do together as a lug, but if we do more public engagement events too. let me know your ideas and feedback. The end goal would be to have a document with instructions, rules, set up, time estimates, etc for each one so that it’s easier to pull them off.

    1. Every set is really a space set – I heard this the other day. It means that no matter what set you have, you can build a space ship out of the parts. The challenge would be to either use only the parts of a specific set, or use a certain part from the set, etc.
    2. Tallest tower – self explanatory. Usually with all misc pieces. advanced modification: 1) with a certain color of 2×2 bricks. 2) move it to another table
    3. Strongest bridge – build over a baseplate (recommend 48) with nothing touch it (the baseplate is lava)
    4. blind build – build a set blind folded
    5. speed build – build a set the fastest
    6. Best freestyle mosaic – like Chris Mcvey’s brick sketches of characters. 2D landscaping on a baseplate.
    7. Every time you find a *non-lego* you take a shot – requires a dirty bin. Incentive it by only letting them drink their beers in shots
    8. Non-dominant hand building – team event
    9. Longest unsupported horizontal diving board. – (half bridge)
    10. Speed height. – First team/person to reach a designated height.
    11. Gold diggers – pick some random qualifications, like 5 red plates, 3 yellow bricks, and a 1×2 slope. And first person to find them wins. You could even plant a specific number of a piece and tell people they have to find them all.
    12. Best interpretation of a 3d object – Either freestyle or everyone has to build a specific thing, like a car, a vase, a house, etc.
    13. monochrome build – self explanatory
    14. Build your name – 2d or 3d
    15. Garbage heap – Build the tallest pile of parts – NO STUDS CONNECTED!

    others?

I have been hearing a lot about in-bag building for polybags, that might be something interesting to try for a competition.

Every set is really a space set

Not sure how to concisely express this (or judge it), but I enjoy starting with a small base and trying to build a symmetrical, balanced tower which grows wider as it rises. Maybe start on a 4×4 base, see who can make the widest diameter structure that can stay balanced? Or maybe add height to diameter, or some more complicated formula weighing both factors? Could be good for teaching kids about symmetry… also structural soundness because weak connections and lack of staggering bricks would lead to quick collapse.

15% bonus multiplier if the tower is built SNOT.

    I) I’m in.
II) Contradiction: tag says “more than a ton”; article body says “nearly a ton.”
III) They cheated; those cables and turnbuckles totally aren’t LEGO.
    IV) Gotta love child labor.

I did a write up for the tallest tower and bridge building. let me know if you want to do write up for others or can think of anything missing in mine.

That write up looks good to me… definitely think it’d be nice to clearly define some of the other challenges / for me to ‘member they exist (non-dominant hand building is a pretty simple one, for example) so we can use them at places like Little City Coffee (they want us back, btw.)

IDEA: could we put a link to this thread’s first post on the homepage, so it’s always easy to find? @arcadiumsol

Actually, it might be nice to have certain key / longstanding threads highlighted, outside of the “10 most recently active threads” list, so we can keep things on the radar even if they haven’t been commented on lately. I’m thinking of how when we have several events upcoming, plus other “noise” threads (#threadjacking) going on, sometimes one or more slip out of the most recents and get forgotten for a while… So the list could include Next LUG Meeting, LUGBulk 20XX, Build Challenges (could be quickly pulled up from anywhere you have people and bricks and need ideas), and Upcoming Events & Displays. And maybe something else I’m forgetting…
