    BOOM. L Sculpt – 3D Modeling program

    http://code.google.com/p/lsculpt/

LSculpt is a program which converts a triangle mesh into an LDraw file. Like the sphere generator, the generated model consists of a surface of 1×1 plates oriented in whichever direction provides the best detail.

Who wants to experiment with this? I’m 70% sure I can figure it out with the somewhat outdated knowledge I have on 3D modeling and rendering programs.

Dude, you are just full of ideas.  This also sounds like fun.  Unfortunately, there are only 24 hours in a day, and I’m obligated by need for brick money to spend some of them working.  But 3D modeling is right up my alley, so you can probably talk me into it.

And with that, I’ve successfully replied to ALL of RJ’s new threads… I think…

I’ve got a RIDICULOUS amount of 1×2 and other white bricks. we can build a venus de milo. do it up. or we should start small…maybe a cloud.

Does this L sculpt program require a digital 3D file before you can start using the program, just as  you have to have a 2D image before you can use a mosaic generator?

At brickfest 2005 at George Mason, the guy who (I think) started this program built an angel using this file:

it was incredible and I think it was about four feet tall.  Below is a photo I took of the finished model.

I think the guy said that part of the problem was how to make it hollow but still be strong enough so that layers above and below were connected so they did not crumble.

Maybe someone used a similar program to make this:

Out maybe LEGO has its own software for building sculptures, but from what I’ve seen they sketch them on special brick graph paper.  I doubt they mess with SNOT building unless they are doing some important detail like eyes.  Anyway that’s my $0.02.  🙂

I’m going to explore the LSculpt software this week and will get back to you all with some more solid insights…
