    Jim and Krista have both volunteered to serve as the next LUG Ambassador. I thank them for their willingness to volunteer and know that either of them will make a great Ambassador for our LUG. There are two ways to vote: (1) send me a Private Message with the name of your vote or (2) attend the Q3 LUG meeting on August 29 and vote in person. The next Ambassador will be announced at the Q3 meeting.

    I had asked each to submit a statement of candidacy, which I now present to the LUG membership. Please review and consider your vote. Feel free to private message either of them with any questions. Please do NOT post any comments regarding the candidates here. Thank you.

    JIM:
    Hello LUG Members!
    I have been thinking a great deal about this opportunity to represent the LUG in the Lego Ambassador Network (LAN). As I see the role, this is the LUG’s opportunity to be represented in the greater Lego community and The Lego Group. To not only fill in the info for the LUG activity and LUG Bulk but to interact more regularly on the LAN and with other LAN members to be able to talk Lego and even influence TLG on current and future regulations they have or may be considering. Further, this is a way for the representative to interact more directly with the LUG membership and bring your concerns on key topics to the LAN, where appropriate.

    With that said, I wanted to bring myself to candidacy for our LUG LAN position. From a community perspective, I represent myself in the Lego community daily. I read and post on topics across the Lego community and interact with many of the current Lego influencers in the community through chats or private messages. I try to keep up on current information and topics occurring in TLG and interact where appropriate.

    I keep a positive environment in my interactions with our LUG, the Lego Community, and TLG representatives. I think any of the members who have worked with me could agree…..hopefully! I am also open to feedback and if you have any for me, feel free to contact me privately! 🙂

    I am looking for an opportunity to get more involved with our LUG and TLG. This opportunity seems in line with my current activity, interest, and ability to interact remotely as family time sometimes regulates my in person interaction.
    Good luck to all of the candidates. I know any of us will represent our LUG in a very good way!

    KRISTA:
    ”Hi everybody! Thank you for considering me for the LUG Ambassador position.

    I regularly share regularly on the LUG’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as update our Google calendar. I feel that promoting our events on the LAN as the Ambassador is a natural step and look forward to promoting the LUG even further.

    I’ve also worked with Tim and the LUGBULK Committee on the LUGBULK spreadsheet and as a spreadsheet nerd, I look forward to doing it again next year. Additionally, I have experience with event management and reporting.

    I truly enjoy representing the LUG and it would be my pleasure to serve as your LUG Ambassador if given the opportunity. Thank you!”

    Is there a way to be able to upload a thumbnail picture of each MOC (similar to the image file for each element in the LUGBULK spreadsheet)? It would be cool to see what each MOC looks like.

    Excellent idea @timf! Thanks @rcgrier3406 for filling out the sheet already and taking a stab at the thumbnails. There’s actually a pretty easy way to do this in sheets. If you select Insert -> Image -> Image in Cell, it auto fits the image to the cell size. I’ve resized the rows so it should fit pretty consistently.

    @timf
    , I tried sticking a couple of “thumbnails” in of my MOC’s just to try it. Not the smoothest, but it worked. When I first did the cut and paste, a full sized image showed up, so I had to downsize each one to thumbnail size by dragging the corners. I also had to adjust the row height to cover each thumbnail. Google spreadsheets is not my forte, so if someone knows how to do this “the right way”, then please do!

    6/14/2021:

    Rough week. Filling in for someone’s vacation at work. Lots of work grind. Met with @randomdan to look at our most recent builds and swap ideas and plans. I might buy some parts from him.

    So I decided to start fooling around with MILSing a green baseplate as the base for a modular park. I haven’t seen many City/Town displays with a park, and this seems like a low stress way to start building modular City sections. I have collected things from smaller sets over time like a fountain, a picnic bench, a park bench, and one of those newsstand sheds from a LEGO Store build day, so, if I pop in some trees, bushes, and build LBG sidewalks amid the green, that would be a good start.

    I want to use a depression onto the base of the green baseplate to save on brick, maybe with a circular dome in the middle. I already know that a two stud MILS thickness around the border of a MILS baseplate is typically all that’s needed for stability.

    Not a serious attempt yet, but a decent way to parse bricks out for an easy project I plan to get into after.

    While I’m waiting for the money to get after the race car finishing parts, I may decide to start building the next row of baseplates up with the paddock/luxury valet parking spaces. I have ordered some rolling garage door parts in LUGBULK, but none with handles.

    I don’t know what I’m going to build this week, but I do have some low stress options at present that will make progress.

    (For everyone’s information)

    Overall, the general time commitment is not too onerous. In general, 1-2 hours per week on the LAN, checking messages and interacting in message board threads (although it could be a lot more depending upon one’s desire – there are many message boards and topics so you can dive as deep in as you wish). In addition to that, there are various reports that need to be submitted to Lego – one report each time the LUG participates in an event or holds a meeting; reports requesting the semi-annual LUG Support; etc. It is not burdensome but takes a little gathering and coordination of data. The Ambassador also receives all of the LUGBULK Communication (when it is open, etc.).

    As most of you know, I have been serving as the LUG Ambassador for the past 3+ years (after Josh and Matt previously served). After deliberate consideration, I believe it is now time to pass the baton to another LUG member. So this is the formal call for a new LUG Ambassador.

    The Ambassador’s main responsibility is to be the communication link between The Lego Group and the various LUGs (and other AFOL groups) globally. This is done primarily online through the LAN website. Managing LUGBULK and submitting reports of LUG events and activities also falls under the Ambassador’s duty. Benefits of serving as Ambassador are getting some inside information on the goings-on at Lego as well as an annual Christmas gift. Matt also got to attend an Ambassador only function in Denmark one year.

    Ideally, a new Ambassador would be elected by the Q4 meeting with the goal of taking over the position starting January 1, 2022. I will stay involved to help orient our new Ambassador and I am willing to continue as Committee Chair of our LUGBULK Committee (and continue handling the LUGBULK process for the LUG).

    If you are interested in the position, and/or have questions, please either respond here or send me a private message. We can also discuss further at the upcoming Q2 meeting. I have truly enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy until replaced) serving as our LUG Ambassador.

    That said, nets are a MUCH more versatile building element than we think of.
    Nets as FULL 2D offstud construction? Why yes!

    But this is one of those nebulous foundation techniques that, while useful for anybody to bridge odd heights and distances legally, no one builds this way yet. Although if you want undulating, snowy or sandy dunes, or more flowing hills, this might be the very best way to do that and merge it back into full System on every side. Since this is string, this could be easily less than 10 x 10 stud sections, and could fill in any gap that bridges one surface to another.

    That is suuuuuuch a sweet technique – I’d get behind a LUGBulk or LUG Support purchase to make it financially viable… if we LUG Supported it, we could get some epically organic sleddin’ hills for the Trolley Museum / other wintry displays, plus the new DUNE movie comes out in October, just sayin’. #threadjackin’

    Thinking along this line a little further, this could help fill out the side hills to either side of the Incline too, and maybe with a big cut in part count.

    With minimal but wisely distributed support at the key tension points, gravity will do its work and make the resulting shape look organic and natural. Not only this, but the top level of tile does not have to be standard tile or plate. Anything with antistuds will do. Height in either direction on the z-axis of the x- and y- axis net is what limits flexibility and shaping.

    As long as the holes are the precise distance apart, any net will fit stud to stud perfectly. I think this stud center to stud center distance is 8.0 mm.

    Maybe it’s a LUG support possibility if a track will be part of our core displays? I forget the requirement around that program, but worth considering.

    Not to shoot my acquisition in the foot, but this is a specialty display, and to justify that as Support, it would have to be a part that we as the LUG want across the board.

    There are no plans for my MOC, far from finished, to be featured regularly in events that I do not and did not regularly attend. The full construction of the track wouldn’t be ready at my building rate until 2023 anyway.

    They are both difficult to acquire in bulk and expensive.

    This is kind of the pitch one would make for a LUGBULK part, and would be necessary to justify the LUG’s overall request.

    Nets sound like a good LUGbulk item. Perhaps they have been available in the past?

    I just tried to look at the LUGBULK 2021 Available Parts List. Access denied. I wasn’t even looking there for nets when I was ordering, because I was focused more on the cars than the track at the time.

    Missed opportunity. 2022 maybe? I don’t remember seeing nets on any LUGBULK list during any year… then again, they could have been there and I just coasted over them.

    Hi Friends… I told myself that I was not going to do this again… I blame LUGBULK 2020. LEGO Ideas is pretty much impossible, but a couple of years ago I was able to thread the needle with the A Christmas Story project (in at least getting it to 10K votes). As something fun, I created the Bailey Building and Loan from It’s A Wonderful Life and dropped it off at the It’s A Wonderful Life Museum (which is about 40 mins from my house in Upstate NY). They loved it and I used this LUGBULK to create the house from the movie and ultimately was coaxed into submitting another project to LEGO as next year is the 75th anniversary of the movie. Anyway, the project went live on LEGO Ideas a few days ago, and I was hoping that the folks in the LUG might give it a vote and pass the word. The Jimmy Stewart Museum (which is just outside of Pittsburgh) shared it today, so I guess that makes it local 🙂 Thanks so much. If you have any other ideas on how to spread the word I am definitely open to that as well. Thanks again.

    Hi Jordan,

    I actually started a project like this several weeks ago. Everything is written in JavaScript so feel free to view the source code and add to it.

    http://warburteezy.com/BrickMosaicGenerator.html

    I set it up so that users can individually pick which colors are available. I figured this would be useful for Lugbulk, or seeing what can be made from the current Pick a brick wall selection.

    Sweet! Second-best MOC ever!

    Unfortunately, this MOC is not historically accurate, I don’t even own a ninja outfit. I wore a LUG t-shirt and an N95 mask. At almost every house, I simply knocked quietly and then walked away, although my first six ‘no contact’ deliveries all resulted in me chatting with people outside. The streak was broken when Frost failed to hear me knocking.

    I love that you made Ben a ninja. We were in the backyard, and I was specifically keeping an eye out for him, and still his delivery went undetected.

    alright, trying to organize a list of mask requests so Will can pack them with lugbulk – let me know if I need to adjust these, but this is what I see so far:

    @rcgrier3406
    – 1 mask with lugbulk

    @tfdesigns
    – 2 masks with lugbuilk

    @bigbbricks
    – 2 masks – Josh will email you separately to arrange delivery

    @amplef0rth
    – 1 mask, with lugbuilk

    @mrmain18
    – 1 mask, Josh will email you separately to arrange delivery

    @bengood921
    – 1 mask with lugbulk

    @randomdan
    – did you want one with lugbulk?

    @m33lutz
    – I’ll email you to arrange delivery – you didn’t do lugbulk, right?

    Thanks @tfdesigns and @knb112! Krista, let’s wait until later in the month for pics to post to see how the timing for LUGBULK sort goes. It will definitely look more “Fall” with the colored leaves, and I’d prefer to drape the back anyway. I have the trees built already, so switching the leaves out will be pretty quick.

    @knb112, I have a Grist Mill/Waterfall/Covered Bridge/Farmhouse scene (kind of modeled after McConnell’s Mills) that I built as a “stay at home” project this summer. The waterfall and water wheel for the mill are both motorized. I’m planning to add some “fall colors” to the trees once LUGBULK gets sorted and distributed, so if you’re looking for stuff to post this could fit the “FALL” theme once I do that. I could “drape” the back so you don’t see all the junk on the shelves, and take both stills and a video with the stuff moving if you’re interested.
