It’s never too early to start thinking about it (I know Pumpkin Trolley is coming up rather quickly of course) and previous years we’ve done some different types of displays. I know we did Hoth with the Town 2 years ago back when we were in the old place and was wondering if we wanted to add it to this year and plan a layout with the trains still able to surround/go around it (or partially thru it) and have the town around it at least partially. Can definitely Christmas-ify it up with the AT-ATs being reindeer again, etc.
Would be something a lil different and, if project support comes in, could be a fun “work as we display” on it as an example to show people some of what we do, what goes into building, etc. Hoth does have a large footprint (I can shrink the snowfield a bit and can exclude the Falcon to save space, it’s not necessary to work on certain parts) so planning the layout and tables would be important.
Just a thought wanted to get it on the table to see if anyone else thought it was a good idea. I know last year the town display was pretty large and looked great and I think we could still do a lot of that and make it integrated and interesting.
September 27, 2024 at 9:56 am #60767John SParticipantNot sure of my status this year as I’m in the middle of a rebuild (as in I just started lol). But my new layout is 4 baseplates deep on their own, before train track going around.
Again, not sure I’ll be ready for this year anyway but wanted to give an idea that layout has evolved and doesn’t incorporate into the city as much, more standalone.

October 3, 2024 at 3:09 pm #60862LauraParticipantHai hai, thanks to Johnathan for posting this. I figured I should follow up with the dates for the display.
Santa Trolley will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday November 29 & 30 and December 1, 6-8, 13-15 and 20-22. Set up would take place the weekend & week leading up to Thanksgiving. and teardown will be in the evening on the 22nd. I anticipate being able to leave supplies at the new building between the Fall & Winter events.
Plan away! I will be updating this as soon as fall trolley wraps up.
October 7, 2024 at 10:42 pm #60941Jonathan WagnerParticipantWell, thinking Hoth can be shortened without the UCS Falcon (gonna use the original one, much smaller) to 6 x 12 32×32 baseplates and perfect line for a train to go over the battlefield (tourists need to see it up close right?)
Thoughts?
October 31, 2024 at 8:39 am #61342LauraParticipantNow that Pumpkin is over I wanted to turn my attention to getting a plan out for winter and finalizing the details for the Hoth set-up. If you are planning to contribute please post here with what you are bringing and how much room it will occupy, thanks!

It has a rotating platform that can plug into a 9V power source. There is also a light inside, (although the current light is battery-powered and is not that ideal.)

November 11, 2024 at 7:15 am #61521Neil TannyanParticipantI have quite a few Winter Village sets and some customized ones- i will also be available to come down and set-up as well. Can also bring modulars if needed.
November 12, 2024 at 7:14 pm #61547Jonathan WagnerParticipant@laura looks good, what is the scale you are using? Hoth is definitely longer than wide (6 baseplates wide but 13 long, which we can pare down a lil to more like 11 if need be). OF course, one or two baseplates along the side and one at the end of the snowfield for the trains works great, will just take some adjustment and playing around with stuff.

Okay, I can make that adjustment, I wasn’t sure what size it was these days, we have plenty of room to work with. I will make sure there’s room to get the trains by.

Sounds great! I also have a selection of winter village sets so we can set them up either as one group or several separated areas. (give the train something to do). As for modulars I have quite a few that are at the museum from Halloween but you’re welcome to bring more. If you want a list of things that aren’t there I can send it to you. Thanks for being able to participate!

Sounds good Kerri, I will allocate space for you! Thanks for participating once again!

That’s awesome @greg I’m sure we can make room for it! Thanks for offering, anything you’re willing to display is welcome.
November 13, 2024 at 11:21 am #61552LauraParticipant@joshhall do we know if the bridge will be ready for Santa Trolley or should I plan the display to not have it?
November 14, 2024 at 11:56 am #61598LauraParticipantHere’s the latest variation, I am waiting for confirmation of the availability of the bridge to determine final routing for the trains.

I was thinking that the inner track could turn at the top right sooner and come straight down and cross over the snow field and then turn and go around the base/hangar area and on its merry way, should use about the same amount of track.
November 14, 2024 at 8:31 pm #61610JoshKeymasterI have made no more work on the bridge since home and garden and I don’t plan to tinker with it before then.
@playingwithechoes – just to be sure, no chance you want to demo the behemoth, right? https://www.steelcitylug.com/forum/topic/the-behemoth-bridge/November 14, 2024 at 9:27 pm #61611PLAYINGWITHECHOESParticipantThe bridge’s counterweight tower is currently being worked on. I figure the whole project won’t be complete till New Year’s.
November 17, 2024 at 6:11 pm #61630Jonathan WagnerParticipantGood news! Almost all the Hoth baseplates have been converted over to the project support ones and almost all the winter baseplates are back to normal! Should have them all at Winter Trolley setup this Saturday and in fact I just checked inventory and I’m all done! 31 ready to return to the LUG.
November 18, 2024 at 6:53 pm #61634Jonathan WagnerParticipant@laura what time does the trolley museum open on Saturday?
Thanks!
November 21, 2024 at 8:44 am #61687LauraParticipantEeeek sorry :0 I have been crushed trying to get museum stuff done and neglected to set up a sign up for this, I will do that now but set up will probably start around 10 on Saturday.
November 23, 2024 at 1:32 pm #61699Greg SchubertParticipantThe 3D Christmas themed LUG logo has a lid that lifts off if you want to turn on/off the battery-powered light inside. I would suggest trying to lift it pulling upward on two diagonally opposed white cylinders (that represent suds.)
In the box I included a rotating table with an on/off switch on the side. If the turntable is turned on during shows, the batteries will need to be replaced periodically. Unfortunately, the power cable that came with it requires a USB port.
