Steel City LUG is now an option to select as a collab when you register your MOC.

I just went in and registered my first 10 MOCs. These will likely be the bulk of my MOCs, but I am going to go through my stuff and see if there is anything else I want to or should take before I finalize my list. Size wise (assuming my estimates are correct) I am sitting at appx 3/4 of one 8ft table. Goal for me is to have exactly one table worth of space reserved. I am also planning on bringing a small riser to maximize my space a bit and potentially bring in some Glow-Zone trucks. We will see if I can make it that far before the show.

As it stands I plan on displaying with the LUG as this is my first convention and I want to make sure I’m with people I know (I’m not very sociable or outgoing).

Most of the MOCs I plan haven’t been built yet… I do most of my building in the summer when I don’t have homework. I can get a rough guess at sizes though. I was also planning on bringing something to elevate some to maximize space. My Diagon Alley buildings aren’t deep enough to warrant taking up the entire depth of a table.

I’d only be able to get down from Friday morning onward… maybe later Thursday evening. Is this acceptable?

This is fine. You are only required to check in by the end of the day Friday (around 5:00 pm) in order to get your badge, etc. So long as the rest of us attending know approximately how much space you’ve requested, we will leave that empty for you.

Fantastic… I’ll get my stuff sorted out and get a space estimate here soon.

When registering MOCs, I’m assuming I just put that I’m with Steel City LUG for the “Where will you display?” section?

I apologize for having so many questions; this is my first time displaying at a convention.

No worries, I’ll see what I can do. After my last post I thought “Crap, maybe I shouldn’t’ve posted that, what if there’s something really serious going on? I’ll look like even more of a jerk than usual.” I hope everything is going well with the Kay family.

I truly appreciate you checking. It’s just been a tsunami of commitments lately. My course load increased 8-fold, Will’s travelling for work, and I truly had no idea the number of things you have to do with school. Between fundraisers, events, and homework, it’s crazy. But overall, we’re good, just really tired. 🙂

PS – the BrickFair rooms at the HI are all reserved. There’s a waiting list. But most likely, if you haven’t made a reservation at the HI already, you will have to find something else. There’s plenty of options, but none are as convenient.

Also, I really appreciate the head’s up on this. I saw when we registered that it still said 2023 so I was going to wait. We couldn’t get in at the HI, but we’re not too far so it’s not a dealbreaker. We may just be popping out for longer to give Zander a break if he needs it.

We have been discussing going to brick fair as a lug with more people than in past years and potentially getting an Airbnb together or something similar! Any ideas? Who’s interested?

Has this idea been further developed?

I’ve now registered and paid for Brickfair VA (myself and Jacob this year). Looking forward to it!

Whoops, I’ve forgotten to keep up with this forum. I’ll read through the backlog when I get a chance to catch myself up. In the meantime, I just figured I’d update you guys on my plans. As of now, it’s looking like the people I was primarily planning to display with may have to drop out this year. If that’s truly the case (I’ll try to keep everyone updated), I think I’d opt to bail on the Pop Culture section this year and set up 100% of my display with you guys. I’m not sure about the table availability situation for the LUG this year (again, I still have to go back and read what’s been said about it), but I believe a long time ago I asked to reserve a table. If I end up fully committing to a LUG display (and the space is still available), I’d like to increase that to 2 tables.

Somewhat related question: if I display all my MOCs with Steel City LUG this year, that would include my updated Godzilla City display. This build is a collab I’ve been working on with my little brother (who is not a member of Steel City LUG), and he’d want to sit by it with me. Would it be cool if he hangs around the LUG area during public hours, even though he’s not an ‘official’ member? I suppose if I need to, I could always just make him an account on this forum, even though he’s not a true yinzer…

As far as the LUG is concerned, it’s generally accepted to have younger non-LUG members with a supervised adult, just be sure to register him for Brickfair if you want him to be during public viewing hours.

I’m working on registering my MOCs but as it stands will likely need a table. Is that okay?

You put in how much you need on their site based on the size (either baseplates or inches/feet) and they get you what you need. Steel City isn’t making tables available that’s all handled by them down there.

Actually that’s what got us in trouble last time. We assumed that Todd knew how much space we needed based on what we registered. @bengood921 can confirm, but I think we need to do both.

Ben, if you need me to pull together a spreadsheet like we had for Erie just to keep tabs on how much space we need, let me know. I’m guessing we need to get that into Todd soon.

Yeah I am still very confused on how that all works. I think it is easier to just have people request a table, half table, and so on. I use my own builds for example. I am not basing my estimates on how large the MOC is. I am basing my estimates on the space it takes for me to display the MOC the way I desire. So in other words, In most cases I am 100% guessing. But hey, far be it from me to tell someone how to run their own show.

Anyways. If we are going to tell Todd a number of tables instead of number of baseplates, please put me down for 1 8ft table please and thank you!

@bengood921 I’ve taken the liberty of reading through this and pulling together everyone’s table needs so you can let Todd know what we’re looking at for this year.

If everyone can just take a look and make sure I have everything correct. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IZVKda90TyXlTiiyA8tFF3zhCawqTEUa-g45a5y33UY/edit?usp=sharing

I can’t remember, how many 32 stud baseplates is it per foot? Or studs per foot, whatever…Our Hoth display will be 6×13 or 6×14 can’t remember for sure but I registered it already for BrickFair.

    6×13 32×32 Baseplates, so 60 inches x 130 inches = 5 feet x 11 feet essentially

@joshhall how many bins of white MILS plates, non-railroad, does the LUG have? I would like to use them for the Hoth display at VA and would need to get them at the meeting on Saturday so I can get them ready.

    I just confirmed in person, 31 32×32 and 2 16×32.

What ever happened to the bin full of white 2×4 bricks?

It was full of various white bricks, 2×4, 1×6, 1×8 mostly. Some of that went into the Hoth MOC already last year and is still in it. The other brick not used was returned at Trolley this past Christmas in the big blue IKEA bag. I may have a bit more of it but not much.

I’ve bought a lot of 2×4 brick over this past year so I can replenish as needed.

How do we “checkout” MILS plates? I notice the checkout words all disappeared.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I got an email from BrickFair letting me know that Todd is working on the map, and that I need to confirm our table layout size. Somehow it is set to four tables, which is not correct. I plan to reply that we have a quarterly meeting tomorrow and that we should be able to finalize everything this weekend. The email includes: “Ready or not the map is happening.” So the time to make decisions is now.

The email also includes the following: “Please be accurate and specific with the footprint of your collab/LUG. We are tight on space. Everyone must squeeze!” I think that’s pretty self-explanatory. What you put down as your space on the spreadsheet is what you will get at the venue. If you haven’t done so already, you should register your MOC’s now. JR – the site says you haven’t paid yet. Don’t wait, if you wait too long, there’s a $35 late fee and you won’t get an engraved brick, you’ll get a paper badge instead.

    >> I’ve taken the liberty of reading through this and pulling together everyone’s table needs so you can let Todd know what we’re looking at for this year.

Thanks, this is a big help and will be very helpful in the final stretch here. I apologize for not keeping up on this better, real life was not good to me in May. Everybody needs to update the spreadsheet, because that’s what I’m going to be looking at. On the BrickFair website, I can bring up the list of MOC’s registered to the Steel City LUG collab, but I can not see what everybody entered for the size requirements. Right now only Will, JR, and Jonny are showing up as having registered their MOC’s.

    >> 6×13 32×32 Baseplates, so 60 inches x 130 inches = 5 feet x 11 feet essentially

So that means we have two tables, at double depth, where there’s five feet of width unused on both tables. That’s more than a full table’s worth of area. We need to decide what we’re going to do with that space, because if we don’t use it, Todd will put somebody else there. Does anybody want that space? I ask because I can’t assume that people’s builds will be suitable for that space, mine definitely is not, and we don’t want to waste any space. But if somebody uses that space, it’ll reduce their own table needs, and so our total table count will go down.

I’ve added a new column to Krista’s spreadsheet – Confirm Tables 6-7-24. All you need to do is put yes when you’re sure your table count is correct. You should assume that once you put in Yes, it’s unlikely that you will get another opportunity to change it.

Todd posts his drafts of the map to the website where we can see them. The current one has various LUG’s and themes in the smaller room, which is a change from several years running, when it was only vendors in the small room. The small room is less fun, and it really sucks for World of Lights. We’ll see what happens. We’re not on the map yet.

@bengood921 at the time of writing this I don’t have access to Google Sheets, I will update that as soon as I can. Just wanted to let you know that my number of MOCs will not be changing and so my request for 1 8ft table is accurate.

The nice thing is, I have enough MILS I will be making to further extend the snow field if we need to take up more space and I have ideas as to what to put on it.
