you might want to get an official ruling on that
Agreed. I am waiting to hear. If that is the case, I am going to spell something else. Which do you think is best: LOLS, LOO7, LOGO, OGLE, ELLO, LIFE …?
The other possibility is that a minifig or one of the round decorated tiles was from a licensed theme. I consciously tried to avoid breaking that rule, but I might have missed something.

Yeah I’d thought of this too. The word ‘Lego’ is very clearly visible on the logo that you’re supposed to be building and therefore is part of that logo. I think you’d actually be hurting your entry if you left them off.

I changed all the controllers to say HELO this morning … but its kind of dumb, especially having helicopters landing on skylights on roof covered with plants that will get blasted by the downdraft of the rotors. Now I’m thinking YOLO, because its about LIFE!

Definitely this.
February 23, 2017 at 12:23 pm #20665Greg SchubertParticipantOk, so they reinstated my LEGO entry without any explanation of why they removed it in the first place. Either they thought that the LEGO trademark was the same as the logo or they did not figure out what the parts were that I used to spell the word LEGO.
Regardless, there are 80+ entries with about a week to go. If I can make it to the top five, based on the decision of the judges, then the winner will be determined by voting via the LEGO Life app. I’m not sure how I am going to be able to recruit people to download an app just to place a vote for me, so I am just hoping to make it to the top five.

This sounds not unlike the struggles @JoshHall faced trying to get 10,000 votes for Cathy on LEGO Ideas – it’s a lot to ask a random Pitt student / employee / alum to register for the website just to cast a vote…
February 24, 2017 at 10:41 am #20676Jim RolfeParticipantprevents me from being able to use my cute little controllers
I don’t know, @greg, you might want to get an official ruling on that because the Lego Life logo does include the word “Lego” on its studs. They may just be saying don’t build the red & yellow square Lego logo.
Just WOW! And Agreed, if they have it in their pic/logo, should be allowed. It looks AWESOME! Let us know when to vote!
March 1, 2017 at 12:16 pm #20702Greg SchubertParticipantI wrote this on February 4th:
Some people are going to do a mosaic of this logo using flowers, astronauts, and who knows what, but that seems too predictable. If someone does the logo with a 3D McEscher design, that might be far enough outside the box to impress people.
Look what entries showed up TODAY, the last day to enter the contest.

…but where’s MC Escher??? He’s my favorite Emcee…
March 1, 2017 at 12:47 pm #20707Greg SchubertParticipantI like the castle one too, and if I had time I was going to make a castle with the turrets like this guy did. Of course, I would try to do it out of real bricks and they have an unlimited supply and color palette of virtual parts.
The castle entry has things going in different directions ex. people are walking on both faces of the steps.
March 1, 2017 at 12:53 pm #20708JoshKeymastermaybe next time you’ll remember to say “I’m going to win this thing!”

Your shackles are only in your mind, Gregory. Free yourself! You could fly, if only you’d let yourself…!!!

Noted. I’d call that semi-Eschered, at best… but it’s pretty cool.
March 3, 2017 at 4:32 pm #20727Benjamin C GoodParticipantAs far as I can tell, this app isn’t compatible with real computers. Since I ditched my Kindle Fire HD (it was the worst), I don’t have any way to download this app, and apparently therefore can’t vote.
(Also, the Amazon reviews are not off to a good start, although there’s a lot of idiots who write Amazon reviews.)
March 16, 2017 at 12:25 pm #20858Greg SchubertParticipant“We’re happy to announce that your entry is a semi-finalist in the Celebrate LEGO Life Contest on LEGO Rebrick!”

YAY!!!!! AWESOME! We’ll get out the vote on facebook and such as soon as we get the details of what needs to be done! Congrats, Greg!
March 16, 2017 at 5:32 pm #20863Matt RedfieldKeymasterYeesh. Download an app to vote? Almost as painful as trying to talk people into creating accounts on Cuusoo to vote for Josh’s Cathedral…
but congrats for realz.
April 1, 2017 at 8:32 am #21114Greg SchubertParticipantYesterday, they officially announced the semifinalists in this contest. Of course the participants did not all agree with the choices of the judges. Honestly, at this point I am wondering how I made it, but I guess I met some of the more important design criteria like actually being relevant to what LEGO LIFE is supposed to be, being recognizable as the LEGO LIFE app logo and being visually ready for a magazine cover.
In addition to the Escher-like castle design, the other designs that were selected are below.

Is there a way to see all the other entries without having the app? (Cause if there is, I haven’t figured it out.) But as far as the final five go, I don’t see why you cann’t win. How are they choosing the winner, strictly by popular voting through the app? Or can Lego’s judges still influence the outcome somehow?
The only strange choice is the black and white one, which is barely recognizable as the logo, not easy to read, and not even that easy to recognize as what it’s supposed to be. Maybe they liked the idea of a logo small enough to affordable as a set.
The other three are good, but if I’m a judge, I can think of a reason not to vote for each one. For example the construction one is good in every way except that it omitted the studs on top. From what I’ve read, TLG loves studs and are very proud of them cause it’s what makes Legos work. But we can’t assume that the regular people voting are going to think about that.
>> Of course the participants did not all agree with the choices of the judges.
Of course not. Still curious to see what got left out that they consider good. I’m speculating here, but it would not surprise me at all to discover that a lot of the critics are prioritizing clever techniques and strong building over what actually makes a good logo. The big question to me is still how much Lego plans to use the winner for promotional purposes after the contest is over.
Do you get a prize for being a finalist?
April 1, 2017 at 3:25 pm #21125Greg SchubertParticipantIt is supposed to be based on voting, but only the judges can monitor the ballot box.
The prize that the finalist receives, that semifinalists do NOT receive, is a second $200 gift card and a picture of their logo on the cover of a magazine. I had to sign an affidavit that said that I am basically turning this idea over to LEGO to do what they want with it.

Congratulations on being a semi-finalist! Your entry will be added to the LEGO Life app for voting next week. Good luck!that was on Friday. So, no instructions on how to vote in the app? I don’t see anything in it.

April 2, 2017 at 9:10 pm #21133Greg SchubertParticipantSo, no instructions on how to vote in the app? I don’t see anything in it.
They announced the semi-finalists online on March 31st. I thought the voting was supposed to start April 1st.
As far as apps are concerned, it would be better ask someone who owns, or at least has used, a cell phone. 🙂
April 4, 2017 at 11:01 am #21151Greg SchubertParticipanthow to vote in the app?
I got this today:
“Hi Greg,
Wanted to let you know that your entry is live on the LEGO Life app! You can view and vote for your entry by opening the app and searching for the “advanced builders” group. Voting is open until April 10th.
Good luck!

What the heck is the point of that? Isn’t my LEGO ID/username good enough? So now I’m apparently “ElderLovablePossum”, which, while mildly amusing, means nothing to me and has nothing to do with LEGO… Ten points from Hufflepuff!
I only had to type “adv” for the Advanced Builders group to pop up. +5
But I’d never have known to do that, so I’d never have seen the contest (or anything else under that categorization) if my friend hadn’t told me. -10
(At least you can “follow” posts or areas or whatever, so now I can access “Advanced Builders” from my home page, which I get to by clicking the minifig head at bottom left of screen, and then – for some reason, not that I’d know if I hadn’t just tried – clicking on the “family portrait” icon…) I’ma call that one a net zero – positive that I can save stuff, negative because it’s complicated and non-intuitive to find my list of saved stuff. +0
But then, the links in my “family portrait” (favorites) are all broken, and I get an error message, thereby COMPLETELY DEFEATING THE PURPOSE. -20… Hufflepuff is really struggling right now…
But then, once in Advanced Builders, it’s just a feed (well, there are a few broken buttons near the top – including a medal that I thought might be for voting on the contest, but nope, just says “sorry, we can’t find that anywhere!”) So then you have to scroll down to find “Vote for your favorite rebuild of the LEGO Life logo!” -5
So I voted for Greg (I’m pretty sure) by just tapping his photo. The title block turned solid/darker red, so it seems locked in.
The good news is, he’s winning. The bad news is, can’t tell whether 100 people or 100,000 have voted… but my hunch is it isn’t all that many, because in the time it’s taken me to write this snarky post making fun of the app, the percentages have changed drastically. Screen shots show:
42% Greg
33% Castle
17% Construction
8% Rainbow
0% Black and White (didn’t screen shot that one)But now I’m seeing:
38% Greg
31% Castle
15% Construction
8% Rainbow
8% Black and WhiteWhile I like Greg’s very much, I think the Castle one rivals it in coolness, and the construction one uses a similar concept (a la DIG Into Reading) with the cave on the left side. And, much of the awesomeness of Greg’s build is in the windows, which you can’t even friggin’ see into in the small isometric photo in the app – you can tell there are minifigs, and kinda make out the penguin kid, king, etc…. but can’t really appreciate the key detail from the overview shot. So, while I vote @greg and hope he wins, I won’t be surprised if the castle ends up winning – even there, you can’t fully appreciate the Escher-ness without detail shots or even a zoom function.
Actually, as I poke around a bit more, I guess each entry got its own post in the feed, and you can indeed tap the pics to embiggen from there. Interestingly, the hearts on the individual posts come nowhere close to matching the voting percentages – Greg’s still doing well, but the construction one has 356 <3 to his 338 <3, and the castle has a paltry 45 <3.
Overall, very confusing. But hopefully @greg wins!
Refreshed again, and now I'm seeing:
40% Greg
27% Castle
13% Construction
13% Rainbow
7% Black and WhiteSo it’s definitely getting traffic, if nothing else, although I can’t fathom how… and the more overall voters while Greg holds a strong percentage lead, the more secure his lead is!
Last note: maybe the random name generator is to protect kids…?
