The Carnegie Science Center has announced Locomotion Weekend 2025 will be Saturday January 18 and Sunday, January 19, 2025, with set up on Friday, January 17, 2025. Note that this is Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend.
They are asking for an RSVP by no later than Friday, December 6, 2024. I guessing that we are GO for this but please confirm interest here.
I am available and plan to do this presuming others are as well.
November 7, 2024 at 8:37 am #61441November 7, 2024 at 9:12 am #61443Gabe VisticaParticipantI’ll have nothing to bring (except my wife), but we’ll be there for Saturday.
November 7, 2024 at 3:56 pm #61446Krista KModeratorI can send some modulars at least. 🙂
November 8, 2024 at 2:17 pm #61457Will McDineParticipantI will be out of town this weekend, So I can not attend. That said, I would be happy to send along some fire trucks if needed/desired
November 9, 2024 at 9:44 pm #61491PLAYINGWITHECHOESParticipantI’m in. I’ll have plenty of trains for the grand loops and a ton more rechargeable batteries than last time.
Got new STEM and Pittsburgh train stuff, some of it quite long so please leave some room on the inside of the R104 curves. Of course the Schnabel car makes its return. XDLet me know any declassified details and I can share on the Phoenix Train Works page to attract people to the event.
Will, I have hazmat trains for your fire trucks. 🙂
Oh, and I have some new exotic supercars to add to the streets: the Cizeta V16T, Jaguar XJ220, and DeLorean DMC 12.November 9, 2024 at 10:31 pm #61495JadeParticipantI may be able to come Sunday depending on work. If I do come I’ll bring my Harry Potter train like last time. Doesn’t require much space and can fit practically anywhere.
November 9, 2024 at 10:45 pm #61497DanParticipant@rcgrier3406 I thought you told me that CSC was supposed to be the 25th/26th when we were cleaning up the LAST Locomotion weekend 😉
I’ll plan to attend, but I don’t have much train or town stuff to display.
November 10, 2024 at 8:35 pm #61517KevinParticipantFor the LUG’s ballasted tracks, how high above the base plate are they? I’m working on an extended Disneyland station and would like the tracks in front to be compatible with the LUG’s supply.
November 10, 2024 at 10:16 pm #61519Bob GrierParticipantNovember 12, 2024 at 12:47 pm #61539PLAYINGWITHECHOESParticipantIt’s 2 bricks under the track. See Bob’s photo for a cross section and 16 studs clearance, on center. Just a baseplate on which two bricks up then track. Or a brick and some plates to do that ballast on the side.
I’m doing the same elevation for my Behemoth bridge but I’m running 1×16 technic bricks under the track to use my double length module as part of the technic tower frame. And I have my platforms on the side not exceeding the height of the rail.
December 4, 2024 at 11:53 am #61841Glenn HollandParticipantI very sadly cannot attend this year. I will be traveling out of state.
December 4, 2024 at 5:18 pm #61844KevinParticipantWhat color are the tiles used for the ties? I can’t tell if they are reddish brown or some shade of nougat from the pic.

@mrmain18, they’re reddish brown.December 4, 2024 at 6:26 pm #61846Krista KModeratorHow many modulars do you need this year @rcgrier3406? I have at least 2-3 more I can try to get done. I should have the new one by thn too.
December 5, 2024 at 8:43 am #61855Bob GrierParticipant@knb112, I was planning on discussing this with @timf and the rest of the group at the meeting on Saturday, but I would say the more the merrier!
Here’s last year’s layout as a starting point. I think this layout worked pretty well for us and would suggest we go with it again unless someone has some improvements to suggest. With this layout we had (8) things running concurrently (6 trains, the Incline and John’s Trolley).
On that layout, we had space for (33) 32×32 MOC’s (light gray squares) and (13) 16×32 MOC’s (light green rectangles), which is where we have the opportunity to change things up. I left John’s Winter Village (6 squares) and my Incline on for now, which leaves (25) 32×32 MOC squares and all of the 16×32’s to fill.
Last year, the venue provided (13) 30″x72″ tables, (11) for this layout and (2) for the back tables for excess rolling stock and maintenance. The venue also provided all of the table covers (in black).
We used (10) of our stanchions to cover the perimeter. The layout itself is 18′ wide x 10′ deep, plus another 6′ in depth for the back area, so 18′ x 16′ overall. We put 4 stanchions across the front and 3 down each side giving us roughly 24′ x 18′ coverage (about the same as we just had in Cranberry).

If you have anything you’d like us to run on the tracks for you, let us know. I’d be glad to help out and look after anything you might want to have displayed here, static or rolling. Hopefully, you can make it to a few shifts at the Home and Garden show where I’ll have the Behemoth bridge ready for our massive trains. Seriously, I think you’ll like just how spacious it is for the iron giants.
@rcgrier3406, @joshhall, @knb112, I’ll have my UP fleet ready to do both grand loops, including the Schnabel car and various Pittsburgh industrial and stem rollingstock for the yard. Let me know if you need anything to cover a vacant R40 small loop.December 5, 2024 at 12:50 pm #61860Glenn HollandParticipantAppreciated – I don’t think it would be wise to lend anything for this show. Everything I build can be easily broken or misaligned, even when I’m the one handling it.
Will look into the Home & Garden show.
December 14, 2024 at 11:36 pm #62059PLAYINGWITHECHOESParticipantDo we have a time spreadsheet to enter shifts for the CSC show?
December 16, 2024 at 5:07 pm #62073TimModeratorDo we have a time spreadsheet to enter shifts for the CSC show?
Not yet but I will work on creating the Event this week so people can start signing up. Thank you.
December 17, 2024 at 11:02 am #62082TimModeratorI have created the Event and it is now Open for sign-ups. This includes signing up for Display Credit, even if you are not able to staff (but will contribute to the display).
I sent an email to Nicole at the CSC to verify the specific Event hours. For now, I have the first shift each day at 10 am to 1 pm and the second shift at 1 pm to 4 pm. I will modify those hours (if needed) once I hear back from Nicole.
December 17, 2024 at 12:33 pm #62084Bob GrierParticipantWe’re about a month away from this event, so it’s time to start filling out the display. Here’s the current layout. There are spaces for a total of (33) 32×32 MOC’s (light gray squares numbered 1 through 33) of which (12) have been filled, leaving (21) still available. There are also spaces for a total of (13) 16×32 MOC’s (light green rectangles numbered 34 through 46), all of which are still available.
If you want to display a MOC or build, simply respond in this thread and let me know what size MOC(s) or build(s) you have, what space number(s) you prefer, and what each MOC or build is.
Just a footnote, your MOC or build will be sitting between MILS’d bases for track or roadways, so the preference is that you MILS your base so it lines up. Nominal MILS height is baseplate + 1 brick + 1 plate.
