I would like to host another space event at my house in preparation for Febrovery- Feb 2025. Its a month long event on Flickr, Instagram etc.. for creating rovers. They are typically space themed but there really are no rules other than they should at least look like they roll in some way.

Christmas season is is coming up and everybody’s calendar gets really booked up. What dates would work for anyone interested?

The best for me is probably January, I can do any weekend. Nov and Dec are busier, and currently not completely decided.

Definitely excited to do this again. We missed the last one because of a dance competition. Agree that January would probably be best, just not International Lego Day weekend.

I’m interested! We should avoid January 25th & 26th as those are the dates for Locomotion Weekend according to my calendar. All other weekends look open!

Sounds like CSC is officially January 18/19 this year and International Lego Day is 25/26. Maybe the 11th or 12th could work?

I am going to plan on hosting the Febrovery build on January 11th. I think that will work given the input of everyone so far. In prior space builds we built, well….space things. This go around, I would like to focus on photography, effects, and scenes for the MOCs. Any ideas are welcome.

I plan to be there on the 11th. At some point you’ll have to let us know what time to show up.

At Q4, we (me n Frost n Walter) talked more about taking Febrovery photos at the meetup at Walter’s house. I had not planned on doing Febrovery this year, and I don’t think I’ll have time to come up with much, but I came up with an alternate plan: I’m going to convert the flying vehicles that I built for Erie into rovers, by adding wheels.

I’ve been working on it in Studio, and of course it’s been more difficult than I’d anticipated, for all kinds of reasons. But as of right now, I expect that I will have four rovers, good for three photos (two rovers are small and identical) for Febrovery, and I’m pretty psyched. I don’t know if Frost plans to bring his construction paper landscapes to Walter’s house.

I still need to post pics from my last trip to Walter’s house, which was this past March. There was a definite difference of opinion regarding interpretation of the build.

I suggested to Walter (by email, so I wasn’t publicly putting him on the spot, since I could think of reasons why he might say no) that we bring along trans-clear parts and give them the turmeric treatment at his house. He replied:

I’m all for it. That’s an awesome idea. I know a few turmeric tricks.

Feel free to post it to the thread. I wonder if there are any other color change methods.

I’ve got a bag of trans-clear parts labeled “parts for turmeric”. I’ve known about it for at least ten years, but I’ve never done it.

I know I saw somebody tint their parts greenish once, but I don’t remember what they used, we’ll have to see if I have the Flickr photos faved.

I created a Flickr gallery of photos about turmeric and Lego. (The fact that not everybody spells turmeric correctly has made it a lot more difficult for me to remember which way is correct, since I don’t cook.) Currently it’s five photos.

Turmeric also turns white parts yellow. That could make for some interesting Blacktron possibilities.

I am planning on being there, along with Jonah. We are both trying to get some rovers done between now and then. I will bring some of my photography stuff.

I will have the lighting I always use along with some backdrops. That morning, I will purchase some Dry ice for effects.

For someone who has never dyed with turmeric before should we get powdered stuff from Giant Eagle or do we need to start with an actual root?

I’ve assumed it’s the powdered stuff, but you should definitely get a root, we can make magic potion or something with it. Get some eye of newt, too.

I admittedly had made some assumptions here: I assumed that, like everything that goes on a spice rack, turmeric is super duper cheap, and that we wouldn’t need much, and therefore Walter wouldn’t have any trouble supplying it. But I can pick some up at Giant Eagle before Saturday if need be @whiteside

It gets cheaper if you buy in bulk! You’re much better off with one person buying a larger qty then everyone handing them a few bucks, as opposed to everyone buying a smaller qty on their own.

Penzey’s is my turmeric hookup (among other spices): https://www.penzeys.com/online-catalog/turmeric/c-24/p-1177/pd-s – six 1/2-cup jars works out to $41.70, but one 3-cup bag is only $19.49!!! (note: I have no idea how much yinz will need. And while I wish I could come find out in person, alas, being a Responsible Adult / Parent / Homeowner is going to have to take precedence for me this weekend…)

    The spice must flow!

I got the turmeric covered. I’m going with the powderized spice stuff. I don’t think the root will work but who knows.

Sweet, Jonah and I are really looking forward to this. I hope the weather is not a factor.

I’m running behind, but I’ll probably be there around 1:15. I’ll have a bag of stuff for turmeric, but I didn’t actually get any rovers built – I couldn’t get them to work out in Studio the way I wanted, and I couldn’t find all the wheels parts I needed. But I’ll still hang out while other people do their Febrovery photos. Also, I will be arriving hungry.

As usual this was a lot of fun! I think I’ll buy some turmeric to try this at home as well.

For posterity: vinegar served as no better of a base than water. Parts took 5-10 minutes to become stained.
