Hey guys,
I love the Space 2024 sets, but the scale between the Rovers and the rest of the sets is pretty nuts. The smart play might be to downscale the rovers but… I didn’t do that.
This is very much a work in progress, but I’ve made a studio build of an upscaled version of 60430 Interstellar Spaceship. It’s not a 1:1 necessarily, but I think it really feels like the same ship. It was important to me to retain the engine opening/closing mechanic of the original, while adding fold away landing gear and a more detailed cockpit. The only thing I wasn’t able to fit was some kind of dock for the Aerial Drone that comes with the set. Even so, I’m pretty happy with this rough draft.
Next step is to start gathering parts for a test build. I’m pretty sure everything will work IRL, but you never know.
Image includes the Explorer Rover for scale. I’m hoping to bring this to the International Lego Day in January along with a few other Space related builds.

I might have added the 3-packs to my orders when they were offering double points and a discount on that set to push me over the GWP threshold earlier this year and thus have, um, “several” extras….

October 29, 2024 at 11:48 am #61329RhettParticipantLanding gear are taken straight from the Galaxy Explorer. I also took inspiration from the Discovery, and of course, the model I’m upscaling.
Adding a bottom flap is a great suggestion, and probably wouldn’t be too difficult. I’m getting ready to do a test build, and I’ll play around with that idea when I do.

The 10497 landing gear didn’t quite fit after the rework, and I had to swap the 4×4 modded tile for a regular 2×4. Definitely on my list of things to rework in a revised model.
What would it take to add a fourth engine fin opening toward the bottom?
The challenge here is that mechanism is not central to the engine fins. And it can’t be, because the side fins are not the same size as the top fin, and the whole aesthetic would suffer if they were. So to make this work you’d need to redesign the mechanism to be taller or to have a secondary mechanism to trigger the bottom fin. In other words, it would take a lot of redesign to make it work.
I’m also interested in finding a way to dock the aerial HERO drone on the back of the ship somewhere.
Finally, I really liked the idea of using the roller coaster rails as part of the intake mechanism to make them longer and wider set than the original model had them, but I’m not sure it’s working. I might be better off just using a bunch of the 1×2 plates with bars to get the same effect, and have them actually connected to the top of the model instead of the intakes. That would allow the intakes to be less disconnected from the center of the ship, and give the whole back end a more unified look. What do you guys think?
