This past summer I decided to start building a big boy 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive out of Lego, after MANY, MANY, hours of searching the internet for pictures, instructions, videos, and reasonable ways to buy parts I was able to create the engine in LDD from a set of instructions I found. Credit for the instructions can be given to Jayhurst, he didn’t post the instructions online, but someone else also built this engine and gave him credit for the design, then posted instructions. Here is a link to Jayhursts flickr page. https://www.flickr.com/photos/jayhurst/sets/72157621286567022/

Early pictures of the train and cars – all WIP. only the LDD pictures are my photos

The instructions came with a tender, but it just did not look quite the way I wanted it to, so I just designed my own tender. Also, I had found so many pictures of passenger cars that I decided to create some of my own passenger cars as well, to match the engine. At first the cars looked excellent, until I put them next to the engine and realized they were WAY too tall. Starting from scratch I created several more cars similar to Strasburg Railroad passenger cars.

    Finished engine design with cars.

This is quite the serious endeavor here. It looks like it’s running on Power Functions? We’ve mostly been using set trains for displays, so an original would be welcome.

I’m still in jayhurst’s photostream (I got sidetracked away from the computer); it’s looking quite impressive, although it appears that its length causes it to swing extra wide on curves, which could get it into trouble in some of our displays.

Yup, for sure. And I saw Mac from DelVaLUG posting on facebook recently about 48 stud long trains bottoming out on uneven tables, etc. – something else to watch out for. That said, this could be really cool if we plan for it.

The engine swings out id say about 4 to five studs when he uses it on my layout, its the new logging train because he takes out all my trees… Keep in mind that its also a 8 wide system not the typical 6 wide from LEGO. Still awesome!

Did you post the picture of it with my Santa Fe cars?

Didn’t put pictures up with the Santa Fe cars yet, ill do that soon.

Interesting, I never thought about that too much because my layout is really flat, but I’ll definitely put it on a grade and see how far it goes. I should probably order the drive rods, running gear, and one more train motor for the tender.
