As you may or may not know, my mother Patty Frost lost her battle with early onset Alzheimer’s this past January. My sister has organized an event for Saturday, June 17, to support the Alzheimer’s Association. She has asked me to organize some children’s activities and one of my immediate thoughts was the derby track. The event would be at Tall Trees amphitheater in Monroeville from 4:00 to 9:30 (although I would think we would pack up the derby track well before that time) so this would be a short duration. I would need someone who would be willing to transport the track and bricks from Josh’s (because I don’t have a capable vehicle) and would also need two or three people willing to staff. I will not be able to run the Lego derby because I will be running another children’s activity during this time. Please let me know ASAP if you would be able or willing to help. We can discuss more at Q2.
May 21, 2017 at 8:57 pm #21614Benjamin C GoodParticipantI hope this goes well for you, I’ll look forward to hearing about it. Unfortunately I can’t volunteer for it because I’ll be out of town, that’s the same weekend as BrickWorld in Chicago.
May 22, 2017 at 12:09 pm #21618TimModeratorDrat, I am out of town that day also. But it sounds like a great event. If the derby track idea does not work, simply doing free building (or theme building) is great. We’ve done that at Cranberry Days several times and kids always love taking 15-20 minutes building.
May 27, 2017 at 10:39 am #21661JoshKeymasterI’ll have my girls and might flee town for Father’s Day weekend. Anything the LUG can provide, it will be there though.
May 28, 2017 at 10:23 am #21680PeteParticipantIncase of Rain do we have a tent to put the Lego under or a pavilion.
May 28, 2017 at 7:48 pm #21689Tom FrostParticipant@pete yes I have a 10×10 canopy, and I might get another one tomorrow; Dunhams has a good deal
May 28, 2017 at 7:49 pm #21690Tom FrostParticipantAs discussed at Q2, we are going to just do a free build for this instead of the derby track
May 30, 2017 at 7:18 pm #21715JoshKeymaster@digivolution @legobear79 are you guys available for this event? Haven’t seen you in a while and this is in your neck of the woods.
Tom asked for a bump to 1 cup for staffing the event, and I’m OK with that. @pete
May 30, 2017 at 7:55 pm #21716JeffreyParticipantI’ll have to see if I can work am that day
Duncan is free howeverJune 10, 2017 at 10:53 pm #21949Tom FrostParticipantI have a tent for this, tables, a kiddie pool to dump brick in to make it easier to build.I also have 3 tubs of LUG play brick. @JoshHall is there any signage for free build? I know there were some signs for derby (i.e. put axles back..etc.) I was thinking we should probably have the banner too, it could be hung on the tent. @Pete would you be able to get the banner from Josh’s some time this week?
June 17, 2017 at 8:54 pm #22036June 21, 2017 at 10:53 pm #22077Benjamin C GoodParticipantApparently I am a terrible person because I totally forgot that this was happening while I was in Chicago. How’d this one go? Are there more pics? What’s the story with Pete the Elephant? He looks super cute. Is this something you think you’ll do every year or was it a one-time thing?
June 22, 2017 at 5:47 am #22083Greg SchubertParticipantPete the Elephant
🙂 Did anyone else notice how this elephant was made?
June 22, 2017 at 7:59 pm #22090TimModeratorUpside down hand print.
June 22, 2017 at 10:39 pm #22100Tom FrostParticipantHow’d this one go?
The event itself was a moderate success. Attendance was lighter than we had hoped but about what we expected. Those who did come seemed to enjoy themselves. All together we raised a couple thousand dollars for Alzheimer’s research. Will there be a Patty’s Longest Day 2? …remains to be seen.
What’s the story with Pete the Elephant?
So, I set up a “Kid’s Activities” booth next to the LUG build booth. I had scratch art, coloring pages, and these hand-print elephant paintings. During a lull in traffic, I invited @pete to have an elephant made from his hand. I didn’t really expect him to go along with it, but he did, and the rest is history.
The kiddie pool for the brick worked out really well. It made the brick very accessible while still containing it. I also brought a kids’ snow shovel for cleanup which Pete will tell you worked very effectively. The kiddie pool was given to me for this event and I would gladly donate it to the LUG for future events if @Joshhall wouldn’t mind storing it.
June 22, 2017 at 11:59 pm #22104JoshKeymastergot a pic of the pool? most likely fine to store it.
June 23, 2017 at 1:00 am #22107Benjamin C GoodParticipant>> Upside down hand print.
I of course was not smart enough to figure it out. Even when Frost was telling me about it today, I was trying to think back to it and I couldn’t picture it now. In retrospect it seems obvious.

Ha, those both sound like awesome ideas. I feel bad that we keep dumping stuff on Josh to store when the LUG already takes up so much space in his house, but if he thinks he can swing it, this seems like worthy use of space.
