I’ve been trying to recreate set 5988 using modern parts; as an extra challenge, I wanted to try making a brick-built sarcophagus instead of the two-part molded sarcophagus of the original set. Everything seemed to map out in Studio, but when I put it together I found that the headlight bricks I was using for an antistud connection are too wide and push against the hinge brick, making an illegal and unstable connection (figure 1).

After scrambling for a minute, I tried to recreate the connection with a 1×1 Technic brick, but because there is less negative space the sarcophagus “lid” clips the bricks when it moves, invalidating the build yet again (figure 2)!

Can anyone help me make this antistud connection work? Is there a way to do this, or is my premise flawed and the parts nonexistent for the kind of connection I’m going for?

How about remove the hinge brick entirely and replace it with a 4L bar that goes into the headlight bricks, and then clip tiles that attach to the lid. If you went with a bar/clip solution, theres a wider selection of parts to tinker with.

…brilliant! I always forget about bar/clip builds; I’m so used to thinking in brick!

    this is an interesting project!

another possible solution to your quandary – use 1/2 pins in the 1×1 technic bricks and 1×3 tiles instead of 1×3 plates

It works with a 3L bar – 4L pushes into the antistud connection I’m using to attach the 1×3 plates.

Thank you! Is this what you mean? If I do this, then there’s nothing for the grille slope to attach to.

You may be interested in using complementary slopes and tiles to get the look you want, though it will be fragile if you try to open it (as a real sarcophagus would be haha). The technique is described in chapter 4 of ”The Unofficial LEGO Advanced Building Techniques Guide”

Thank you! I’ll take a look at this – I have to scrap most of what I’ve been working with anyhow, as after some tinkering, the sarcophagus is too shallow to snugly fit a minifigure, and the edge of the lid still clips on the antistuds holding the slopes if I try to make it seal cleanly.
