zip codes vs town names

A bunch of folks have their town name on their profile but I’m restricted to numeric input when editing mine, and clientside page tweaks to let me type letters in the textbox seem to fail serverside validation (it doesn’t change when I click Save). Which plastic internet wall have I run headlong into this time?

oh yeah…i forgot about what I was trying to do there…I was trying to make a member map and zip codes are the only way for me to do that, rather than everyone putting in “pittsburgh” or “north side”, etc…I’ll pick that back up eventually.
