Added my availability. Looking forward to the weekend.
November 30, 2023 at 7:24 am #56023Glenn HollandParticipantHaven’t checked the forum recently…
I’m interested in participating this year too. Unfortunately life has made it such that I don’t have many new trains this year but I’ll certainly bring what I have.
I can help staff all day Saturday and Sunday in costume/uniform.
January 10, 2023 at 10:46 am #49568Glenn HollandParticipantApologies if this has been asked/answered already:
For getting in Saturday morning, will we be able to use the service elevator? My train boxes are large. An elevator would be helpful that morning.
I assume we can just say “I’m here to set up for the Locomotion event” and that will get us past having to pay admission?
@timf, is it possible to have an extra table for display/train maintenance?January 9, 2023 at 9:15 am #49493Glenn HollandParticipant@emperorofthenorthpole – do you want me to send up one of those tiny bluetooth speakers to put in/on a train for “choo choo noises” fun?
That’s alright, I don’t have anything I can use them in/on currently.
January 4, 2023 at 3:49 pm #49299Glenn HollandParticipantExcellent. Thank you @timf for that useful information.
@joshhall is hosting the MILS build day this Saturday – I will drop off the remainder of my curve track so it will be ready to go come Friday. It should be as easy as placing the MILS baseplates down, then the track on top.I will not be able to help until Saturday morning – planning to be there as early as possible with my trains – thankfully this is usually the last thing that gets set out on a display.
Looking forward.
December 21, 2022 at 7:31 am #48973Glenn HollandParticipantIt would definitely be a good idea to have many display tracks, I could fill a table with the extra stuff I’d like to bring.
@greg One idea I had was the Pittsburgher, an overnight service connecting the Steel City with New York. The attached image is what inspired me to look into this train.
Mac
You just gave me something to research. I could probably find a typical consist of this train.
December 20, 2022 at 2:39 pm #48959Glenn HollandParticipantAh, that was you next to the PennLUG display! I was displaying there that year.
My username has little to do with Santa Claus but I’ll help with the trains if need be.
December 20, 2022 at 7:21 am #48947Glenn HollandParticipantI am fine with just about anything – I try not to be that particular. I have trains that I’d prefer to keep on the inside line JUST in case, but I have some I could use either way. Or we just go for it and run trains wherever.
Coming from PennLUG, I’m used to plexiglass lol
December 14, 2022 at 7:32 am #48833Glenn HollandParticipantThe Bluebrick draft looks nice.
I would suggest eliminating the back to back turnouts in the top left corner. That would allow large models to use the inside or outside loops, and the loops would be independent of each other.
December 13, 2022 at 1:52 pm #48799Glenn HollandParticipantAs Josh said, yes, none of my locomotives will properly run through any curves less than R104. They are all battery powered.
I do have some R104 turnouts (switch tracks) but they lack ballast. It could be a challenge to have these ballasted on MILS before CSC weekend. However, if someone feels inspired to give it a shot, maybe we can work something out.
I think using some disconnected storage/display tracks will be sufficient for this weekend, since I assume we are not aiming to model realistic operations.
The R104 and R120 is indeed all-plastic track, which I understand will be limiting to anyone with 9v equipment.
December 12, 2022 at 1:19 pm #48758Glenn HollandParticipantJosh Hall and I spent some time Friday to ballast the large radius curves. A 12×20 layout, even if just a simple double-track loop, would be awesome. That said, how much straight track is ready and available on MILS?
I have more than enough scale-model locomotives and cars to swap out throughout the day.
December 2, 2022 at 5:30 pm #48543Glenn HollandParticipantI recognize that this may not be the point of our involvement, but I would like to offer up my modest collection of railroad artifacts to fill space should we find it necessary. I have a couple lanterns, historic photos and books, and plenty more.
If it’s not needed, no problem here. Happy to offer it anyway.
November 29, 2022 at 7:46 am #48408Glenn HollandParticipant@joshhall “Also talked to Glenn a bit, and if we want to try to incorporate his trains, which need a wide radius track (which he has), we’re talking ~4x~8 baseplates for half a circle, so we’re looking at wanting a big foot print.”
Correct. If it becomes impractical, I can take a backseat with no problem, but running trains would be nice 🙂
There are reference instructions for R104 and R120 radius track on this site: http://l-gauge.org/wiki/index.php/Reference_Instructions
I can lend my track for this event. Let me know what I need to do.
November 8, 2022 at 9:21 am #47814Glenn HollandParticipantWhat are the times for this event, including setup on Friday?
I will plan to bring some large radius curves and turnouts as well – that’s all I can use for the larger models. I have my own batteries and chargers.
November 3, 2022 at 7:29 am #47666Glenn HollandParticipantIt’s been a while since I participated, but as long as you’ll have me I would love to bring some trains. This is an event that I most likely can participate in.
I have unballasted track and plenty of “8-wide” models. I can also show up in full engineer or conductor clothes, because why not.
July 2, 2021 at 7:25 am #39804Glenn HollandParticipantWould @emperorofthenorthpole be interested in bringing trians?
I will be attending on Sunday as a part of a small Lego layout representing the Strasburg railroad, so I will have trains to display. I don’t expect to be able to display everything on their layout, so if there is interest/space for having some trains on display, I can help out.
I also plan to host a small talk about lego steam locomotives that day.
June 20, 2019 at 10:21 am #31588Glenn HollandParticipantI will plan to be there Saturday morning & early afternoon. I’ll need to leave by 4:30 for a previously made plan.
Will regular Lego tracks be used? I have a loop of 88 stud radius curved and 120 stud radius. I can bring them Saturday morning. Most of my locomotives won’t handle much less than that (a couple will, but the newer ones will not). I can bring the rolling stock I have as well.
June 16, 2019 at 3:41 pm #31566Glenn HollandParticipantI wasn’t able to make it this year due to prior obligations.
They did put a layout together and it’s very likely that somethings will change, the first of which may be the height of the rail.
I’ll be sure to post the revisions once they are finalized.
June 7, 2019 at 7:22 am #31477Glenn HollandParticipantI don’t have anything old-timey, unfortunately. No Lone Ranger either.
I *might* could literally throw something together. No promises, but:
-when would it need to be finished?
-battery or 9V?April 7, 2019 at 12:44 am #31032Glenn HollandParticipantIf you are referring to the R104 turns, they are done all with straight track. They space the outer tie by 1/2 stud per piece of straight track and it makes a long gentle curve.
Did not notice that, but that still creates a problem with the amount of money needed to buy that much straight track. Unless we buy them through Lego (using the LUGbulk like program for Big LUG projects, Sorry I honestly cant remember the name) it honestly might be cheaper to just buy the 3rd party track as opposed to brick linking all that straight track.
For what its worth, I am absolutely for this. I think we have gone too long without a LUG standard and it is about time we get one that will work for us and we stick to it. I just want to make everyone aware of what goes into it. for those wondering about MILS and ballasting parts for this standard, reference this: http://l-gauge.org/wiki/index.php/Reference_Instructions . Regardless, I think this should be brought up at the q2 meeting, and we should draft some examples of this for q3 that way we can get the ball rolling on parts ordering and what not.
Actuaally Bricktracks is R104 and R120. The method using curves to make straights is somewhere in the neighborhood of R256.
I’d love to see this adopted as the LUG standard for train layouts. PennLUG will be rebuilding its layout and we’ll be taking a very similar approach. It’s not intended to replace LUG layouts, but provide a separate platform for collaborations.
If anyone has questions, let me know. I’m on the “rules committee” and we’re still pretty open to suggestions right now while we get a first layout together at Brickworld Chicago this year.
April 5, 2019 at 1:11 pm #31006Glenn HollandParticipantThanks for sharing this Josh! We’re really excited to bring forward a new modular standard, and hoping it will become THE standard!
