Hello,
My name is Kevin Berry. I live in Franklin (about an hour north of Pittsburgh). I am 62 going on 12. I just started LEGOs. I was never allowed to have them when I was young and I got tired of watching my sisters grand kids play with them (they wouldn’t share). So I begged the wife to let me get a starter set. I look forward to meeting everyone hope to learn as much as I can to help out.Attachments:

September 5, 2021 at 11:15 am #40668Greg SchubertParticipantI’ve been to Franklin, it seems like a great town. Kevin, are you a puppeteer?
September 5, 2021 at 11:28 am #40672PuppetBoyParticipantSorry about the multiple posts, but I got an error messge that said it didnt go through the first time.

September 5, 2021 at 11:49 am #40678JoshKeymasterGotta stay 6 feet away from the puppet?
September 6, 2021 at 9:24 am #40688Rich MillichParticipantFranklin/Oil City. My old stomping grounds. I lived in Polk for a while.
Anyway, welcome to the fandom. Coming out of the Dark Age, we call it.
Here’s some starter information that I wish I’d had from the beginning.
If you’re new, and have a small collection, I would suggest concentrating on LEGO’s five “core” colors, which are easy to remember, if in a Pittsburgh context: red, white and blue, black and yellow. I personally add Light Bluish Gray, as this color has a ton of connection possibilities, and acts as a fine buffer color between sections of a build.
When buying off the rack, I would also suggest finding a small set you like, and buying multiples of that. “Any part is good if you have a lot of it.” Small Creator sets are fantastic for this.
There are several other ways to acquire parts that don’t involve sets, and it’s smart to ask members here how to go about it to save yourself some money and grief.
We here in Steel City LUG are one of the few worldwide that maintain a brick inventory that can be earned through building for or even staffing events. Sometimes the club or members come into possession of scores or hundreds of one part at a time, like 2×3 plates in purple, 2×2 pearl gold tiles, or, in my case, a full cup of 1×1 black bricks with studs on all sides (called the Travis brick).
The best next step is to share what you WANT to build. Some members build sets, some like to do MOCs (My Own Creation), and some just like to tinker and discover building methods. We have Train builders, Castle builders, Harry Potter specialists, Space builders, Space plants builders, Space Pants builders, City modular building specialists, architects, heck, we were even building amusement park rides at one point.
Every builder does something cool. What do you want to do, Mr. Berry?
September 6, 2021 at 8:13 pm #40692PuppetBoyParticipantIm not exactly sure what I want to build. I kinda like a varied assortment. For now the main goal is easy and cheap. So for now I will be sticking with basic sets and what I can pick up at yard sales.

It’s probably a lot easier now with masks! Sorry, could not resist. Welcome, Kevin! Looking forward to meeting you. 🙂
September 11, 2021 at 12:14 am #40833PuppetBoyParticipantIt would be funnier if it weren’t for the fact that for one of my shows last year the organization I was doing the show for insisted that I do the show with a mask on.
