On February 7th, the NMRA (National Model Railroading Association) had a show here in my hometown. Many of the train shows I have been to are typically anti-Lego. This one was the exact opposite! I brought my monorail city display to the show. Many of the modelers were impressed with how complex Lego can actually get. There was a running joke as to who’s hobby is more expensive. In the end, we called it a draw.
I’ll be taking this display to Brickworld Chicago and then show it a 3rd time in August.Looks great, can’t wait to see the next addition!

Ha, this made me el-oh-el. And my immediate reaction was to argue that Lego is more expensive, but then I realized, I don’t know train prices, so I can’t really say. Since Lego builds are more likely to get tall, though, I would think we’d at least win on a cost per square foot basis. Although I don’t know that “win” is the right word here.

That’s interesting, I have yet to run into that. For years, our biggest show of the year was the Greenberg Train Show, and we also did the Ligonier Valley Railroad shows a bunch of times, and they definitely loved us.
For trains the size of ours, I’m not sure we’re the expensive one, especially once you add electronic controls and light/sound and learn from experience that it takes some electrical engineering to reliably power a layout bigger than a simple circle.
I wasn’t really thinking of it in terms of trains-only, or even only what goes into a public display. It did occur to me that a lot of the train people also buy a lot of train and model train-related memorabilia and whatnot, and there’s probably a lot of options and a lot of them are expensive.
