I don’t know how to re-name a thread so I’m starting a new one. Long story short, Westinghouse reached out to me to see if I could give them a proposal to design and build a LEGO Westinghouse Atom Smasher that they can keep. At first I said Yes Of Course but then realized I have no idea how I would actually design it because that’s just not my thing. I wanted to retitle the thread to catch the eye of anyone who is in the market to make a few bucks. If you are interested, please let me know and I will connect you with my Westinghouse contact!
@carlsonf, as you probably know, there is a LUG member who is obsessed with nuclear models AND who is an exceptional MOC designer. Perhaps @playingwithechoes would like to take this on.
I am taking a look at the scope and trying a few ideas in Studio. With Josh and I both highly interested in the project, there is no shortage of talent available for the project. You can tell Westinghouse about Phoenix Train Works and my proclivity and passion for nuclear energy themed train builds.

Josh has something via hinge and plate balloon method and I’m working from another angle of build to get that lightbulb shape down. @playingwithechoes, once you have a digital design put together, do enough of a test build to check it for overall stability and for it’s ability to maintain the bulb like shape. @carlsonf ran into issues with the stability of her Cooling Tower when going from the digital design she found online to the real thing. We were able to change a few things and reinforce others to stabilize it, but it took several hours of trial and error and a number of additional parts to do that.
I’ve also found that the digital models don’t take into account things like center of gravity. I built a white dragon from someone else’s digital design several years ago, and the neck wasn’t stable and sturdy enough to support the weight of the head without the whole thing flopping over so I had to redesign the neck as well as the body to address that.
Doesn’t have to be the whole thing, or even using the right colors, but enough to make sure the finish product will support itself and can be moved without self-destructing!

@rcgrier3406 thanks. i made the bulb out of a series of calculated overlapping brick and slopes and put in some internal half rings for structure. I will have some leeway and room for tweaking if needed but overall, structure analysis and diagraming seems quite stable, even when the model is split apart in half for showing the internal equipment. I submitted a design proposal to them last Thursday along with estimates and a gnatt chart of scheduled work per my day job as a project manager.
I might have put in a small Lego snail on the chart where time is shown waiting for Lego parts orders to come by mail, but that’s my little sense of humor in the proposal. If selected, the mail snail will not be part of the final model. But I may upload just that snail here for LUG members to have fun with. 🙂
Im gonna drop from this, my perception of how the project was going to work was way off and im too out of sync. Open to support but didnt realize we wernt doing a single packet proposal as a group
You’re more than welcome to continue your proposal, if you like. From what I read and understood in Nancy’s email to them introducing us, we would be submitting multiple designs since they only mentioned the height requirement so there’s a lot of different ways to make a MOC of it.
If not, that’s fine too. Not sure how long it takes for them to review everything, but if I am selected, I’ll be documenting the process to help future commission requests for the LUG.
I think ill keep playing with it because i want one for my platform regardless at this point. My industry is very different from yours in terms of how projects work and that threw me off, we have single (internal) designers with multiple options where im assuming you have multiple suppliers with different bids. And one of the main things I focus on is rework and wasted work so im stuck in my mindset that its already at that next phase. I also dont want to give a wildly different estimate on parts and labor and have that be the driving factor over quality.
I would love to stay in the loop of if they respond nat, and if it works out.
