I’m in the process of moving steelcitylug.com to a different host.
The cost is 296.55 for 1 year. I think we’ll see a strong improvement, specifically on things like the gallery, uptime, and response time. It will also open the door for future server/db intense efforts I’d like to do.
The current site is https://site84125-fe515w.scloudsite101.com/ until I move over the DNS. You’re welcome to login with your current credentials and play around. I’ll wipe the database there this friday or saturday when I cut over the DNS.
My ask now is:
1) I’d like approvals (or pushback) on spending the money. it’s a 30 day money back guarantee.2) do a side by side comparison on load times and let me know if you see a difference – easiest to see the difference with the yearly report
https://site84125-fe515w.scloudsite101.com/v2/?p=yearlyreport3) keep reporting slowness/down for the current site here or in discord so we can see how often we’re having problems. I’m seeing issues at least weekly since August.
December 10, 2025 at 3:29 pm #67329It’s soooooo much faster! Only problem I’m having on mobile ios is the header/banner takes up half the page. Doesn’t look like a way to minimize.
I’m in favor of updating the host. Do we still share bandwidth with other sites? I think you mentioned that was part of the slowdown issue?
December 10, 2025 at 3:37 pm #67330no more sharing. it’s our server.
good call out – template/theme/menu will certainly be updated as we go along https://www.steelcitylug.com/forum/topic/new-theme-for-the-website/
December 10, 2025 at 10:52 pm #67332Spot check says the VPS is way faster. I approve the migration spend.
December 11, 2025 at 8:52 am #67334So on the current site, I login with my wordpress.com account (I don’t have a unique login to the current site). I don’t see that option on the login page of the new site. Is that a setting that needs changed, or did we lose that functionality?
December 11, 2025 at 11:34 am #67336I’m not a programmer guy but if you got it showing faster speeds, I definitely approve! XD

interesting…should be fine, but I wonder if it’s because your account was synced with steelcitylug.com and not the new(tempoary) url. it should work once the cut over happens.

Did you try using your WordPress login on the site and it didn’t work, or did you not try because you didn’t see the button your used to seeing?

The Login with WordPress.com button isn’t even showing — ie, I’ve never created a password on the steelcitylug.com WordPress — it’s always used WordPress SSO to log in.

I did for giggles — I didn’t expect that to work as the password should never have synced between wordpress.com and steelcitylug.com, but stranger things have happened, so I figured why not try it — no dice!
I’m guessing after the cut over if I do a password reset with the same email address it will just reassociate my account and have a specific steelcitylug.com password.
December 15, 2025 at 2:36 pm #67365December 15, 2025 at 7:48 pm #67371@allen, how about now?
The WordPress.com login option is completely gone. I ended up having to do a password reset like I suspected and set a unique password for the SCL website. Not a big deal, and for the improvement of the site, it’s definitely worth it.
One other issue is some of the font colors in light mode are difficult to read (Black on Dark Grey). Turning to dark mode seems to work decently for that.
Also, I approve the reimbursement for the migration.
December 16, 2025 at 1:33 am #67374December 16, 2025 at 11:03 pm #67385Fixed the WordPress login, I think. It was a plugin I didn’t bring over.
Yep! The SSO for WordPress.com worked fine for login this evening.
December 19, 2025 at 11:55 pm #67393@joshhall autocomplete for mentions doesn’t seem to be working (edit: typing @ with a complete username still seems to mention, it’s just the nice user search part that doesn’t show up)
Also the gallery for Winter Trolley won’t load, could be a casualty of the migration.
December 20, 2025 at 9:29 am #67402@joshhall, some more items for the punch list from the migration:
1. Except for one or two items loaded after the migration, it looks like the last image in the Media Library is from December 6th. Missing items would include the gallery photos for South Park Light-up Night and Winter Trolley, plus any photo submissions of Christmas ornaments from the Q4 build challenge. I can delete and then reload the galleries for both South Park and Winter Trolley if that’s easier for you.
2. Photos that support the “MILS” and “General” inventory item files didn’t make it over, but the photos for the “Sets” inventory did make it. ???
3. The Member Map link just goes to the Home Page and not the map.December 28, 2025 at 11:51 am #67430Seems like shift sign-ups are dropping the decimal part when displaying shift values. Locomotion shows the half-day shifts as worth “0 cups”, but Bob said they’re 0.5 cups and that shows in the total of cups that will be earned anytime there’s an odd number of half-day sign-ups, so it seems like it’s just a display bug.
December 31, 2025 at 12:13 pm #67440I haven’t been getting notifications from the site…so I am just seeing all of these….working on the email problem first.
January 1, 2026 at 3:00 pm #67465Things I did today (so far):
1) added a theme switcher at the top (to help when i get to migrating it – keep reporting what you think to be theme bugs (colors, text, layout, etc) here https://steelcitylug.com/forum/topic/new-theme-for-the-website/ )
2) made the ‘notify me of replies’ (aka subscribe to threads) checked by default
3) fixed user tagging
4) fixed the member map link
5) fixed the inventory imagesto do:
-gallery updates/migration missesnew user registration:
-make sure it works at all
-gets newsletter subscription
-gets welcome messageextras:
-rotating displays functionality-site theme

I’m gunna blame chatgpt for this one. I think it added (int) when I had it do the highlighting for shifts with no one signed up. I know when I need a float and when I don’t.

I take my words back…can you do upload winter trolley again? The database tables are out of sync now and I don’t want to go through and untangle the references…
January 1, 2026 at 8:09 pm #67481actually, hold off on uploading anything, @rcgrier3406 – finalizing a new tool…so far it makes uploading SOOOOO much easier…just trying to get it to automatically create the gallery. as it is right now, you have to go into the gallery and select “add from other source” and select pics from the wordpress gallery)
http://steelcitylug.com/gup/ is the URL, but I’ll let you know when it has the full automation to test out.
January 1, 2026 at 9:49 pm #67512BOOM! I love it. works great from phones too. now anyone/everyone can upload pics for events, they’ll automatically be added to a gallery for that event, and we still have the manual step of adding the gallery to the ‘past events’ album as an approval step. there’s an audit log of who submitted what in the admin section (for admins only) and also a linker tool to link galleries to events. https://steelcitylug.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=lug_photo_submission&page=lug-envira-linker
